TÉBESSA

EARLY FEBRUARY 1943

It isn’t very often that an entire battalion of infantrymen is flown over seven hundred miles to the front. It’s a great thrill to watch a formation of thirty-three transport planes hit the steel runway one by one. And in every one of those ships there’s buddies of mine. Takes about an hour for all the planes to land and taxi off the runways. The boys pour out laughing and raising hell generally. The mortar squads roll out of the planes with their carts and ammo. The rifleman, machine gunners and officers touch their feet to the ground again and feel at home. Colonel Darby scampers around to all companies, greeting them and checking up on personnel.
